The Fifth Toy Story Film Trailer Pits Woody and Buzz Versus a Tablet Computer

It has been 30 years since the first Toy Story film was released, launching the animation giant as a major animation studio and bringing audiences to beloved characters like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now household names.

In 2026, the fifth installment is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a brief look into the plot but leaving viewers curious how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.

The Latest Addition: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Frightens the Gang

The preview reveals Bonnie — who received the toy collection when he left for college — receiving a latest toy, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie acquires her first tablet computer, and she is excited about it.

Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the toys appear to consider it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it probably is.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

An element the teaser doesn't touch on is why the sheriff is back with his companions in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a new adventure with Bo Peep (the actress), traveling with a carnival and helping prize toys find good homes.

Certainly, the filmmakers will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him appear in Bonnie's room without warning is somewhat puzzling, though. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have returned with him. And where is the stuntman toy (the star)?

Connections from the Last Installment

Fortunately, some elements are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act the cowboy did before departing for his fresh path was pass his sheriff badge to Jessie (Joan Cusack), entrusting her as the leader of the toy domain. The clip displays the badge pinned to her outfit.

It is hoped she is still the key figure among the toys.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.
